Maps that Made Climate Change

Saturday 5 October  SOLD OUT!

How do we know that climate is changing, and how do we spread that knowledge accurately and meaningfully? Maps are key to both knowledge and communication of climate change in the 2020s. These maps take many different forms, yet their diverse images share two crucial features: they are never neutral descriptions, but instead calls to action in the present and the future; and they have deep historical roots and antecedents.

To reflect critically on how we think about climate change today requires attention to past ways of comprehending and representing climate cartographically. Taking in examples from around the world and emphasising the importance of imperialism and colonialism in the production of climate knowledge, Tom Simpson aims to give a new account of the science and politics of climate change.
