The Royal Warwicks and the Christmas Truce of 1914
Sunday 6 October
The Court House Ballroom Jury Street
10.30am
Andrew Hamilton and Alan Reed are the authors of four books on the Great War. In this talk, they will celebrate the 110th Anniversary of the Royal Warwickshire Regiment’s involvement in the iconic Christmas Truce of 1914.
Andrew and Alan follow the detailed account of Andrew’s grandfather, who agreed with a Saxon officer to a truce in No Man’s Land, and describe the run up to the truce and the reasons behind it.
Our speakers have uncovered a wealth of first-hand accounts to paint a comprehensive picture of the events over the 1914 Christmas period. Using their extensive long term and recent research, they tackle the vexed question of whether a game of football was played between British and German soldiers – and whether the construction of three memorials to an ‘international’ game of football in the area is justified.
