Warwick Words has been hosting annual Festivals in Warwick since 2002
From 2002 to 2015, our annual Festival was a wide-ranging literary Festival – a Festival of Literature and Spoken Word. Guest speakers included novelists, poets, playwrights, as well as writers of non-fiction – journalists, biographers, historians – many authors familiar to our audiences from national media. In 2016, the Festival became specifically a History Festival, focussing on events with a theme of the past: Warwick is the ideal location for a History Festival, with its own rich history and a wealth of historical buildings in which to stage our events. We also host local speakers and authors, as part of our ‘In and Around Warwick’ local history project. Our guest speakers, many of whom are acclaimed historians of international standing, tell us how much they relish coming to Warwick for the Festival, and meeting our enthusiastic audiences.
Sadly, in 2020, we are unable to stage any live events because of the Government restrictions on public gatherings in response to the coronavirus COVID-19 pandemic.
Our activities are funded chiefly through sales of tickets for our events, which account for more than 80% of our income each year. This year we will have no ticket income. We are also unsure whether we will receive any funding from our local authorities or other grant-making bodies if, for the time being, we are unable to stage live events.
Yet all is not lost. We are now planning to stage a virtual 2020 History Festival: several of the guest speakers who would have been joining us in person this autumn have agreed to make pre-recorded talks available to us to stream to our audience.
In these circumstances, we would welcome your voluntary donation in support of the virtual Festival – although we are not making these online talks ‘pay per view’.
Help support Warwick Words History Festival
Hitherto, only a small percentage of our annual income has been made up of donations from individuals, usually as Friends of Warwick Words. In the absence of ticket income or grants, we are hoping to raise sufficient donations to ensure that we can survive this period of enforced cancellation. Your donation will help Warwick Words stage future Festivals, beyond 2020, when the present restrictions are eased or rescinded.
Warwick Words is a company limited by guarantee (registered in England and Wales 06501973) and has no share capital and no shareholders: it is a not-for-profit organisation and any surplus, year on year, is retained to fund future activities.
Please note that although it is a not-for-profit organisation, Warwick Words is not a registered charity and so Gift Aid does not apply to any donations received from individual donors.
