Cathryn Enis and Glyn Parry - Shakespeare before Shakespeare
Stratford-upon-Avon, Warwickshire and the Elizabethan State
This new book by Cathryn Enis and Glyn Parry aims to make you think differently about Warwickshire and William Shakespeare.
The book focuses on three families – the Ardens, the Shakespeares and the Dudleys – to show how the fate of one connected them all. Based on many years’ research, this work brings forward over twenty new documentary references to William Shakespeare’s father, John, and links the world of the Shakespeares in Stratford with the glittering, but brutal, ascendancy of Robert Dudley, earl of Leicester and his brother, Ambrose Dudley, earl of Warwick, through the Dudleys’ relentless pursuit of the Catholic gentleman, Edward Arden.
The talk will focus on these new discoveries about John Shakespeare, the feud between Arden and the Dudleys – and the real reason behind their ruthless pursuit of power in the Midlands – challenging what we think we know about the reign of Elizabeth I.
