Muv: The Story of the Mitford Girls’ Mother

Wednesday 7 October
Castle Hill Baptist Church
2.00pm

Everyone knows the six flamboyant Mitford sisters, but their formidable mother – known to the family as Muv – has long been undeservedly overlooked.

In Muv: The Story of the Mitford Girls’ Mother, leading historian Rachel Trethewey uncovers Sydney Redesdale’s pivotal role in shaping her daughters’ strong wills, confidence – and even their extremism.

A divisive figure in life and legacy, she was seen as saint or scapegoat depending on which Mitford was speaking.

In this vivid talk, Rachel brings Muv centre stage for the first time, revealing the remarkable woman at the heart of one of Britain’s most famous – and infamous – families.
