The V-2 rocket was part of Adolf Hitler’s plan to break British morale. The world’s first rocket warhead, the V-1 ‘Doodlebug’, had already killed thousands when a new, and more terrifying, weapon appeared, seemingly out of thin air. As tall as a four-storey building, the V-2 blasted to the edge of space before falling back to Earth at supersonic speed, killing thirty thousand in one fell swoop.
Yet Churchill’s intelligence chiefs had known of the weapon weeks before it first struck. British operatives hatched a plan with Polish resistance forces to smuggle a V-2 rocket out from under Hitler’s nose.
