Plunder: The Last of the War in Europe, 1945
Sunday 11 October
Bridge House Theatre
3.00pm
The last weeks of the Second World War on the Western Front in Europe witnessed extraordinary scenes of heroism, horror, melodrama and pathos.
In his new book, Max Hastings presents a cast of fascinating characters from those final weeks – British, American and German – some of whom distinguished themselves through wonderful deeds, others through the basest crimes.
The book takes its title from Montgomery’s ‘Operation Plunder’, the 23 March 1945 Allied crossing of the Rhine. Plunder follows events after that action, culminating in the German surrender. With his signature narrative of blending personal experiences into the ‘big picture’, Max mingles accounts of the battles with stories of the people who played many and various roles in the last European act of history’s most terrible war.
Max will be in conversation with Festival Director Aaron Manning.
