The Lost Portrait of Henry VIII

Saturday 4 October
Castle Hill Baptist Church
10.30am

During the 1590s, tapestry maker and local politician Ralph Sheldon commissioned a set of 22 portraits of monarchs and contemporary figures for his home, Weston House in Warwickshire. The majority of this famous group of portraits is now considered lost.

In July 2024, news spread around the world that Sheldon’s lost portrait of King Henry VIII had been rediscovered – in Warwick’s Shire Hall, hiding in plain sight.

This talk will be presented by Adam Busiakiewicz, art historian and consultant in the Old Master Paintings Department at Sotheby’s, who made this thrilling discovery.

Adam will explain more about the painting’s history, just how it came to be rediscovered and give new insights into Sheldon’s celebrated set of pictures.
